Default Replacing nearside rear shock absorber advice please

Afternoon everyone .
My 05 failed it’s mot today for serious fluid leak on its nearside read shock .
If I can’t find a decent second hand genuine shocker ( can’t really afford a brand new genuine one ) I have noticed eurocarparts sell replacement ones at a fraction of the cost . As they aren’t genuine would I be able to just replace to faulty one or would I have to replace bot rear shocks ?
Cheers
In advance.

Personally what ever brand you choose (I'm not a Monroe fan, but that's personal taste.) I would always replace dampers in pairs otherwise you will get uneven, unpredictable and even dangerous handling as a result.

As its a rear shock, your car will have Nivomat rear dampers/shocks (UK std,) unless its been converted (or missed by the factory recall mid 2010) I would guess it unlikely that ECP will not stock nor sell Novomat dampers ..... unless you want to change both sides and the springs your kinda stuck with the Volvo /Nivomat replacement... do some more searching for a similar age from a breaker if you dont want to splash on a new one ..... there is a "upgrade kit" from Volvo for a pair, that works out cheaper than buying individually ... approx £350 from last recollection.

Hope it helps

Hi Mate.
In my opinion it's impossible to find such a thing as a decent second hand shocker unless you remove it yourself from a fairly new low mileage car. As I remember the second hand ones were £100-£!50 and you may end up replacing them them the next year.
I done both mine 2 years apart with no issues, even towing caravans etc when only one was new. I did change both together on my C4 Grand Picasso but they were only £20 each. I got both my genuine Volvo Nivomats from an ebay seller. First one was from ebay £300, second one I phoned them up £315(No ebay ad). Braydon Motor Company 0208 985 2255.
I decided to stick with self levelling Nivomats. The upgrade kit I believe is for different coils(stronger I think) and non self levelling shockers. With non self levelling, when you load up the car, it sits down at the back and you change the steering geometry and your steering is slower and the car handles like a pig.
Changing the shockers was an easy job(1 hour each side) but I had to weld a deep socket to a ring spanner. After pulling back the carpet I put this tool over the nut at the top of the socket and had a torx tool down through the socket/ring spanner to hold the shocker shaft. Watch it though as there is a rubber piece between the top of the shocker and bodywork- don't loose it/forget to put it back. The bottom bolt is easy enough and you remove the shocker through the hole in the lower wishbone - I think when I had the car jacked up I had to also jack the wishbone up to get enough space below the wishbone to get the shocker out.
(PS. Check the German ebay as I did see some cheaper there just after I bought my first shocker)

Is this the "upgrade kit" that's supposed to be such a great deal??

I'm out of the country right now, perhaps someone could call FRF to confirm part number and price please??

Cheers

Dave

PS - Based on this previous posting, looks like its the right number

Looks like it, but the price is very much in excess of what I was quoted a couple of years ago .... 2 springs and 2 Nivomats ... the "upgrade" (Volvo words not mine ... originally intended for cars in territories that did not get Nivomats as std) it was much cheaper than two Nivomats when I inquired.

While I have a v70xc and not a xc90 I have changed one leaking nivomat rear shock for a used one from another v70xc and have suffered no handling issues.
