Default Thermostat Problems

I was just wondering if anyone else has had bad luck with thermostats recently? It seems that each one I've bought from Brookhouse has lasted badly.

Both 82 deg thermostats I've fitted seem to have lasted under a year before playing up. When new, they go up to the 2nd line (as they should with a 82 deg 'stat) and stay there, or thereabouts. They drop back a bit with the heater on full whack. However, after a months they've given up maintaining a steady temperature. They go up there, but start falling back with the heater on and going downhill. Approximately dropping back to 65ish.

I've ordered a different make and I'll keep posted. But I wondered if anyone else is currently sitting in a cold car?!

I haven't owned my PV for long enough to say if they last or not but I was wondering about the type of coolant you're using and its compatibility.

Thank you. That's a very good point and I use a silicate antifreeze.

I use a ready mixed one from Halfords:

I'm not really genned up on the different chemical compositions needed - I usually follow the advice of decent companies.

In Holland I like this company www.kroonoil.nl

They recommend this coolant =>

https://www.kroon-oil.com/en/catalog...rganic-nf/103/

I don't know how that compares with what you are using however as I can't see any technical data on the Halfords site.

I've just tried the Halfords advisor for you and they don't have anything older than a 164 listed so I chose that and the advisor couldn't recommend anything - so it seems possible that what you are using isn't quite right.

If so be careful when changing from type to type (you do need to check with someone about the suitability first!) - some coolants when mixed gel together to cause lumps.
