Penrite steering box lube

In some ways much like the fairly common constant velocity joint discussions on the interweb, where the early joints used oil but now they all use grease, a change towards a grease in a steering box kind of makes sense (especially for versions that are famous for leaking - I'm thinking Land Rover series boxes in particular)...

...however using the Penrite product selector even they don't recommend it.

Still I reckon it is worth an email to see what falls out the tree (when you give it a shake) if you're so inclined.

I'd be interested to see what they have to say - but as I'll be using oil I'm not so interested to arrange this myself!

I use it at work in the steering boxes of Bentley Derbys, 4 1/4, 3 1/4 etc but they are very old (1930s to 40s) manual steering.

It is a very very thick oil almost like a grease.

When I owned a Daimler 2.5 V8 there were some posts on the club's forum that recommended it, particularly for leaky boxes.

For farm applications where a gearbox seal is failed, some people use corn head grease. I have used it on a brush hog gearbox that was cracked and wouldn't hold oil. Seemed to work fine.

I don't see any reason you can't use semi-liquid grease myself.

It is used muchly over in the world of aircooled Volkswagen where the steering box on early Transporter (splitscreen) notoriously leaks almost as soon as you re-seal it. I used it in my old bus and in fact, the steering was much better and kept the old steering box clean at last.

I used it in my previous Amazon which also had a for what ever reason had an incurable leaky steering box. It was frowned upon when I mentioned it on this forum. But, you know....

A few days ago: It was late.

I was a bit bored with the TV.

I started a thread on the series 2 club forum asking if others there had used Penrite steering box lube because if there was ever a steering box that leaks it is a Series Land Rover steering box...

...not a great reaction to be honest - but I guess people are still on holiday. Anyway I ended up sending an email off to Penrite asking about the suitability of their product for Land Rover series steering boxes. They think it is a suitable thing to use and claimed to use it personally.

I reckon I might buy some of the stuff to see how it feels between the fingers and how liquid it is - because if they reckon it is good for a Land Rover steering box (and I agree!) then I can't see why a 1960s Volvo steering box wouldn't also benefit from a more modern alternative.

(So if and when I get some I'll post back)

OK-- Phoned Penrite and they could not have been more helpful..all my questions dealt with..........................
so got rid of the EP90 out of the box---straight forward. Then comes the interesting part...getting semi fluid grease in the box--- straight forward with the top off but it would have been easy with the top in situ and using a large syringenor a funnel. The constituancy is easy to work with.

Took the car out...seems OK ..have a trip to the Durham Classic Gala on Monday, a 200 mile round trip.
