Battery V40

-7 degrees centigrade here today and the V40 had no battery power whatsoever.

When I pulled the bonnet to get a jumpstart from the neighbour we both noticed how small the battery was.

The last owner had stuck on a 50amp battery physically too small for the space and obviously lacking the power.

Batteries seem to have different codes here in Poland than on the UK websites I have looked at.


Does anyone know the correct dimensions, specifications for the battery I should have for a 1998 Volvo V40 1.8 petrol?

I am getting conflicting information, some places saying it should be 60 amp and others saying 75.......

Haynes manual says 50 to 73 Ah .
If your battery is a few years old, it may be past its best ?
Mine originally had the equivalent of a 027 (code number) volvo battery fitted originally, but a battery with the code 096 will also fit.

Yes those codes are what I have found but don't appear to recognised in Poland.

I have listed a few from that same website and will try and track down one tomorrow.

Bizarrely, batteries are exactly the same price here in Poland as in the UK, so this battery will cost me almost a third of what I paid for the Volvo!

All my V40s have had batteries smaller than the battery tray. They're usually held in place by a large plastic clip which has some preferred positions for standard battery sizes. They're a bit his'n'miss though, some have been very stiff while others have been so loose i'm worried they'll drop off while driving.

Perhaps it's been lost by a previous owner, who's resorted to using a strap to hold it still?

I got a nice big varta 74Ah today and it started instantly.

But I did notice the tray was cracked underneath too, so maybe the strap was for that reason and not because the battery was physically too small.



..........now the hunt for the radio code!!!!!

I obtained a 90ah that fitted the tray fully. loads of capacity!

Every V40 I've had has had an 027 battery fitted, and I've changed them out for what I believe is the standard size for a diesel car (all mine have been petrol) which is the 096 size, 75ah mine is, as I opted for a dual purpose type that's also suitable for use as a leisure battery for the caravan, it was about 70 pounds just over a year ago. I use it for the 'van in the summer then use it on the car in the winter to keep it in use, it's perfect.
