Default Replacement wing mirror glass

Hi everyone!

New to the forum here. I've tried searching this issue to see if it's been posted before but I cannot use the search bar on my phone for some reason and I've left my laptop at home.

Picked up a V70 last weekend and I love it. It's been well looked after but at some point the driver side wing mirror glass must have been damaged because it looks like a replacement glass or the original that has been knocked out has been botched on incorrectly as it is not central and therefore catching when adjusting (please see attached)

It looks like there is a glue overhanging to the left. I was thinking of taking a hair dryer to it to remove the glass by prying it off and replacing it with one I'm gonna order online. I'm presuming it should just be that simple and a new glass will come with either an adhesive or the correct mounts to clip in place.

Just wondering if anyone has had to do this before.

Much appreciated

Alex

It doesn’t look like the correct glass to me.

The new glass won’t come with any adhesive... you just get a glass. You’ll have to get some adhesive yourself. Something like Gorilla glue works well.

You may have a wire attached to the back of the existing glass for the heating element (heated mirrors if you have them). You’ll need some force to remove the glass, but don’t yank it off either in case you break any wiring.

Its an aftermarket mirror glass stuck over the original cracked glass. The original has a plastic backing plate bonded to it which clips onto the mirror motor behind - these cheap stick-on ones just stick onto the original saving the cost of the backing plate. But I doubt the original heating element behind the original glass will be powerful enough to heat the stuck on one as well.

To get rid of it, no need to unstick the aftermarket one, just remove the two in situ, get your fingers behind the outer (right hand) edge and pull towards you and the blacking plate will release from the motor. Then disconnect the heating element wires. A replacement with backing plate is available on-line from Summit which are a well established brand - heated & non heated versions available. Or Volvo of course.

Have a look at post #66 on my thread, link below, there’s a pic or two from when I replaced mine which may help.

I agree with Ferg, yours appears to have a piece of mirror glass bodged on top of the previous one.

I used a seller on eBay called ‘europartsdealer’ for a heated replacement glass for £10 which has been fine.
