Default Turbo flanges - Could someone clear things up?

Hello everyone,

My turbo has about bit the dust and is blowing a lot of oil into my intercooler and throttle body, so I am looking to replace it.

I happen to have a 1997 Volvo S70 2.5T with a dead auto gearbox but a good engine/turbo.

Would I be able to swap the turbo out of my S70 in to my 940?

I beleive the turbo in the S70 is a 15g and the turbo in the 940 is a 13g.

I have heard people saying that only the early 850 T5 15g's bolt straight on to the 940 exhaust due to them being conically flanged or something. I am a little stuck here.

Does this mean that it is just the connection between the turbo and exhaust is different? And that I could weld the exhaust flange from the S70 onto the 940 downpipe and it would work?

Also is the connection type in the newer turbo layouts stronger as my 940 seems to have continous exhaust leaks between the turbo and the exhaust

Sorry if I have asked some stupid questions and worded things badly. I am just not 100% sure where I sit with this.

Thanks,

Michael.

You can use your 15g, it will probably have a flat flange so you'll need to saw off that first inch of your s70 downpipe. Then reclock the 15g and stick it on mated to the s70 downpipe flange you've welded onto your 940 downpipe.

Thank you Barkster, that is EXACTLY the answer I needed!

Will the 15g offer any potential (With better fuelling etc) performance gains?

I suppose having a downpipe with a flat flange would be advantageous as that type of turbo seem easier to find these days if I wanted to upgrade at a later date.

Thanks again!

Michael.

If you fit the 15g and then fit a manual boost controller ( with a boost gauge ) you gain an easy 50 bhp over stock if you run 10-12 psi. The car will be a lot quicker. Is it a b230fk engine or b230ft?

Hello bakster,

I believe I have the B230FT (HPT).

50bhp is quite a large increase. Would I need to alter the fuelling?

Thanks.

Michael.

The ft should see about 30 bhp increase if you run at 10-12 bhp. Fueling will be fine. Go any higher and the ecu will be guessing a bit too much. Mine's about double what it started with once I stop it burning oil!
