Default Stop/Start

Hi All - D2 with stop/start system that seems to have gone AWOL since mid December with the exception of 2-3 brief appearances after 150-200+ mile runs in the day - only for it to be gone again the next day.

The message seems to be permanently stuck on 'Battery Charging' but there doesn't appear to be an issue with the car starting etc. - no hint of weakness.

Has anyone suffered similar issues & if so how was it rectified?

Cheers

I thought the stop start cars had a small auxiliary battery to power the stop start system, maybe that needs looking at??

The stop start will switch off if your battery is low or getting weak . Check that your battery is not starting to fail as this often happens in cold weather.

what you need to do is charge the battery for a long time a small charger can take two days or so , a 20 or 30 amp charger overnight or a whole day .. Then try it .. The cars charging strategy means long runs are not necessarily the way to do it . Make sure you disconnect the battery as this resets the battery monitor , The earth clip of the charger must go on the body not the battery terminal .There is a convenient bolt on the left suspension tower .

Default Clan's advice is good (as always!)

Just to confirm that Clan's advice is spot on. When I purchased my S80 D3 Stop/Start from Motorpoint in October 2013 at 6 months old I think it had been sitting still for a few weeks. For the first few weeks the stop/start function rarely worked. It kept showing the battery charging notice even after many commutes at 100 mils per day. Reading advice about Stop/Start on an earlier post, towards the end of 2013 I bought an modern, automatic trickle charger from CTEK and connected the battery for a 48 hour top up. I also disconnected the earth terminal per Clan's advice. Since then, some 35k miles later, it has functioned correctly without a glitch.
