Default Maintenance required warning message

I have just had my S80 D5, current model, serviced by an independent garage. Delighted with the service and the price which, by the way, was a third of the Volvo agents quotation!! One slight problem. The independent garage cannot reset to maintenance required message. It is a different set up to the old S80 where he could reset it. Does anyone know the answer to this problem? He told me I need to go to a Volvo dealer to get the reset done.

This is the latest model s80 yes?
If it is, it's still the same principles as the old shape just that it is different with the push start button.
Firstly keep your foot of the brake.
Press start
Push in the trip reset thing on your tacho
push and hold start to turn car to the on position (wihle still pushing trip reset)
now wait for the warning light to flash 3 times before releasing the trip reset button.
That should reset the service light.

Default Volvo shafts us again!

Regarding my query about resetting the "maintenace required warning" after an independent garage service, I have now had it confirmed that the current S80 cannot be reset by the method outlined by "aussie".
I had some warranty work to get done today and I asked the garage about resetting the maintenance message - yes, they could do it - however there was a standard charge for this of £50.00. And I thought their service charges were high!!
I didn't take up their offer!
My thanks to "aussie" for sending the info anyway, it was appreciated.

takes 3 mins to connect to vida and to cancel service light ! but i suppose dealers have to pay for the equipment and have high overheads ! but a rip off to me.

not version 2009 B E1U1 :-) they have to find the car in the car park ,get the car in connect the car wait for the process , push a few keys , then do the Health check and fill out it's form which is mandatory then check another computer system to see if any recalls or policies have to be carried out ,then fill in the work sheet so in there for a good 20 mins at least . AND its a bit of a cheek to take it in to a main dealer for just the light to be reset because the outfit who serviced it picked the cream and the profit . He would have no hassle with warranty work where there is little or no profit and the bits he cant do he doesnt bother about and lets you pick up the bill !
Why didnt he arrange for the dealer to do the reset and present you with a properly finished car? If i was an independant that's what i'd do . You wont have any record of any fault codes stored so any early signs of anything wrong wont be picked up on , Hopefully he did the pollen filter ! You get what you pay for I guess..

the recalls should be checked days in advance when booked so parts can be ordered if required, only takes 2 minutes,no charge to customer ! i also carried out health checks,no time given from my main dealer i used to work for ! and no charge to the customer, had one customer who came in with his s80 with his ems light on,diagnosed as faulty oxy sensor, was charged only £50 for checking codes and having look at,customer came back straight away and said the warning lights are still on ! he said the service light is still on as well ! i have had it serviced recently, not by us but his local back street garage ! talk about taking the p**S !

It was not cheeky, the dealer I went to supplied the car and should have made some sort of effort even on a "once off" saying tha car was in his premises already!! Dealers charges were three times the independent garage so if the maintenance light stays on so what!! I can hit the read button!

Default Monoply / Restrictive Practices

Under EU law the vice like grip dealers had on servicing new cars was realxed approximately two / three years ago. However, keen to retain this money spinner for their dealers Volvo have fixed the service maintenance required light so that only their dealers can reset it thereby excluding independent garages from "fully" servicing the car.
Any views on whether or not this constitutes a monoply or restrictive practice would be appreciated.

It would seem you can turn the warning messages of WITHOUT going to a Volvo Dealer. It states for new XC70 but should work on all new shape V70 and S80 models.

From link ---

for the new 2008 volvo xc70 with the push button start [just turned my light off tonight after hitting 14,000 miles]

1. start the car. the time for regular maintenance light will appear.
2. press the button to shut the car off, the time for regular maintenance light should still be on the screen.
3. breifly press the start/stop button, the dashboard will become brighter and the service light will still be on. [you are now in position I]
4. press the odometer button first then quickly press and hold the start stop button until all the idiot lights appear, when this occurs you can release the start stop button.
5. while still holding the odometer button wait until the orange Information icon flashes, when this occurs release the odometer button and you will here an audible signal that the reset has occured.

on both vehicles your radio station presets will be lost after this reset so if you have any stations you like write them down before hand.

From link ---

1. Make sure to start with the T1 millage showing on the trip meter. (Not T2)
2. Press the ignition button once with your foot off the brake. The car will not start.
3. Press and hold the trip reset button.
4. While holding it press and hold briefly the ignition button again so that the run position is selected, again with your foot off the brake.
5. Release ignition button, while continuing to hold the trip reset
6. When the "i" begins to flash, release the trip reset.
7. Done

I just did this method on my 2009 XC70 T6. Only difference is that I had to keep pressing the ignition button for 5-6 seconds while holding the trip reset in order to get the "i" to flash. Works well and did not reset radio station or other settings. Thanks to all for the great info on this forum.
