Getting heavy with new brakes
I wasn't going to bother asking this, cos I'm sure it's another dumb question, but you know how something niggles away so you just can't ignore it?
Anyway, I had new brake discs and pads put on the front of my V70 D5 today. The guy who fitted them gave me the usual "Go easy on them for the first few hundred miles or so, ok? Give them a chance to bed in." I said yeah sure, don't worry - I very, very rarely hit the pedals hard; I always try to keep things nice and smooth and relaxed, generally. Makes life a lot less stressful, imo. Of course, within five miles, the numpty in front of me had slammed his brakes on hard, so I had to do the same, and I came juddering to a halt behind him (from about 45mph to a standstill). Grumble mutter mumble hurrumph, and all that. Probably partly my fault for being a bit closer than strictly necessary, etc. Then the fitter's words came back to me and I've not been able to get them out of my head all afternoon. Is there a possibility I've done some proper damage here, or will it probably be ok? |

They'll be fine.
Our fleet of work cars suffer daily abuse - including heavy use of freshly changed brakes. No issues that i'm aware of - they all seem to brake quite effectively. I wouldn't worry.

The 'bedding in' instructions given by many are often wrong - it's not a case of driving gently in fact you should get the car up to speed and do a few hard stops.
The 'drive gently' nonsense is a misunderstanding of the fact that the brakes wont operate at maximum efficiency until bedded in, so it pays to drive cautiously and allow extra braking distance - it does not mean 'no hard braking'.
