Drain off the gear oil quickly . The easiest ATF to use is dextron III available anywhere ( even Asda !) . At a push you can replace it with iso 46 hydraulic oil . I have done this on many machines with zero side effects on the system .
The problem with using gear oil is its additive pack , which is designed to withstand extreme shearing forces generated by gear teeth working against each other . ATF & ISO 46 oil pour very much like water when cold , EP ( gear oils) turn very thick due to the base stock oil . At worst , could snap the drive belt , right after the pump breaks of the vanes that create pressure & jams the rotor head . A light oil / fluid allows the vanes in the rotor head to fling outwards due to the turning force generated by the engine turning the pump assembly , the thick oil impedes that action that at its simplest can result in no power assistance when needed most . Further the gear oil additives can adversly affect the seals in your power steering system , leading to leaks & bursts occuring . Been there , fixed that , written big bills for ruined kit Hope this helps Steve

Hi Guys,
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I was getting no response and then I forgot about it. Anyway, I am here. I went with the previous owners research and reasoning that GL-4 was yellow metal friendly and that perhaps a worn power steering box may been a more viscous fluid in order to operate "properly". Having said that, we did do it partly as an experiment too. We had the oil around with no use for it and we wanted to know whether it was just low on oil or whether the problems lay deeper. As such, we experimented freely and now that we know that it is just a case of refilling the reservoir we have put in the right fluid. Thanks for the responses and concerns, it is much appreciated!
