Default Handbrake cable detacted

Hi

Just wondered if anyone had come across an issue with the "handbrake" cable being detached from the foot pedal?

I reattached it a month ago and its off again.

No obvious signs of wear on the cable end or indeed the pedal mechanism, and cable routing is as originally, so so weird angles.

Plan (B) is a cable tie, or (C) replace cable or pedal. Seems extreme given that when fitted it looks as its should and cant see whats causing it to detach.

Car is a MY2005, UK car.

Thanks in advance.

David

This happened to me last year. My handbrake had been quite good, but then gradually got worse over a few weeks - then one day the rear cable came off the connection to the front cable under the centre console.
It turned out that one of the expanders in the brake drum was seized so that the cable was not returning properly, allowing it to become unhooked.

Hi

The cable is off at the footbrake end - which is weird...I wonder if its slack in the same way that yours was that is allowing it to "unhook".

Given all the woes with handbrakes on these cars I was surprised that otehrs had not had the same issue!

Default Parking brake pedal mechanism

Hi there. Did you manage to sort this one? I have exact same problem. Cable off at foot pedal, reattached and tightened, within a few hours cable was off again.

I started to think this through and thought no way has someone designed a mechanism whereby the cable remains attached by tension, defying gravity and staying hooked on to the ratchet.

I went back in to the footwell with head torch on and found a silver metal object that looks like a bent paper clip. Wow could this be a cable retaining clip that has popped off! I think so. But unfortunately cant figure out how it reattached to the pedal. Have trawled forums and can't find anyone talking about this or any pictures.

I need a simple picture of what the pedal mechanism looks like where the cable hooks on to the ratchet and where this little clip hooks on. Any help appreciated.

Ps xc90 2009 d5 manual. Non self adjusting foot pedal.

Thanks,
Tone

Hi

Yes, all sorted since that post.

There is a wee "paper clip" like metal bit that is there to retain the cable end but it gets bent over the years.

I went in with a small cable tie to ensure it does not escape and to date its been fine.

I have a spare brake in the garage - so I can take a photo so you see clearly what its like.
