Several years ago I came across a post by skyship007 where he in clear and concise terms explained why a high mile D5 should use a Shell Helix Ultra 5/40 fully synthetic oil, combined with Liqui Moly Ceratec at every oil change:
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...=Shell+ceratec A year ago I sold my 2002 Euro 3 V70 auto. At the time it had 233K miles. The new owner just reported it flew thru MOT and now has 255K miles, using no oil and returning 50 mpg. When I bought it had 209K miles on the odometer. Having read skyship007's posts I followed his advice and in 23K miles in two years the engine ran like a proverbial watch - still does according to the new owner. I have been following the same routine with the other Volvos I've owned and own - diesel or gas(petrol for you UK guys). For what it's worth - I owned a trucking company in the US and all my semis ran on Shell oil (Rotella at the time). Never had an engine fail. I just bought 5 liter of the Shell on eBay for less than £20 - usually you get it for around £22/5 liter

I don agree with ceratec, you dont need it, it could cause problems. Havent known it cause any, but with these kinds of additives its always a possibility.
Shell 5w40 is good oil though. This engine at 200k isnt really high mileage though unless its been abused. There is some nonsense spoken in that thread btw, but thats normal, most people dont understand oil, but why would they when the necessary info is not there to be seen without looking. This is why I created the oil thread, to try and provide info that is correct and not forum/pub talk. Last edited by AndyV7o; Apr 14th, 2019 at 18:22. |
