Default Reversing sensors, intermittent fault? S40 SE Sport 2.0d

I've had an intermittent fault with the reversing sensors on my MY05 S40 SE Sport 2.0d 70,000 miles, since last year, having disappeared throughout winter but has come back in the last month.

When I start the car in the morning and engage reverse, they work fine, I get to work which is 21 miles away, they don't work and get a constant tone from the start. Same happens on the way home.
This doesn't happen every time and I really can't seem to figure out a pattern except for the above mentioned.

I've had my car serviced at a Volvo dealership and no codes or error messages have ever appeared during service time or on the dash.

Any ideas guys?

I've got the same problem in my 04 plate, same spec, S40... amongst other problems... I've also noticed that, when it IS working, it's not as responsive as it used to be... I have to be closer to objects for it to work, have you noticed that?

I've not noticed that, doesn't mean it's not happened though. I gave mine a good clean last night, but if they work sometimes I doubt it would be that.

The rear bumper is supposedly very easy to remove, so the next job I guess is to remove that and clean all the connections.

The manual states that if there's a problem, the orange 'i' light will come on, no light?

The bloody thing worked fine this morning!!!! Lol.

No "I" light on mine, either. And I gave them a good clean at one point, too... They then worked fine on the first drive and I thought I'd cracked it... then the constant tone came back!!

I've not looked but if you find any instructions for removing the rear bumper online then please let me know!

ETA: apparently this has instructions for bumper removal, from page 5 on: http://www.westfalia-automotive.de/f...%2013.8018.pdf

If you go on the Volvo website and go to S40 accessories, there's an excellent pdf about fitting both front and rear parking sensors. I've no link sorry.

Does yours work fine when you've just started the car and not when driven for a bit?

Sometimes it's fine when just started, sometimes not. It is completely random which is annoying as heck!

Mine always works when started? Weird problem, these cars are prone to these strange intermittent electrical problems aren't they!!

Just about to check if mine will start and then I'm off for a new battery.
I've still got the original battery in mine (now 8 yrs old) and I read somewhere (think on Swedespeed) that the electrics can get "confused" when the battery is on it's way out... Think they should only last about 5 years, too!
