Default Gear stick

Alright guys, this is my first post. Got my first ever Volvo last week, an S40 sport diesel 06. Anyway, I've noticed the gear stick shows no resistance to being put into reverse. So much so, that I've mistakenly put it into reverse a few times instead of first. This is the first volvo I've ever driven, but I'm assuming it's not supposed to do this? If indeed the gear stick isn't supposed to this, is it a common problem and does anyone have any advice on how to correct the problem. Thanks!

As there are 5 different manual boxes with different shift patterns and construction designs, it is hard to guess which one you have.

What engine are you driving and how many gears does the box have?

Being a Sport, I'd assume it is a 2.0d? Means it would be either an M56 (5 speed) or MMT6 W3 (6 speed).

R top left or bottom right...

If MMT6 then you should have to push it down and then over. If you can move it straight over, then the R-block has broken. Afaik it is only plastic. But you need to replace the entire mount which holds the stick too...

Thanks for the reply. The engine is a 2.0d with a six speed gear box; reverse to the top left. I'd noticed the gear stick could be pushed down; and suspected that it would be in order to get it into reverse but obviously its going into reverse without having to push it down.
