Default Gear Selector Service Required

My 2005 D5 (two weeks old to me!), popped up a yellow light and helpfully informed me that my 'Gear Selector Service Required' - I've lost the lights on the gear selector and also the semi-auto Geartronic facility.

I don't think it's the solenoid problem, as the box still locks into Park as it should.

I've done a scan with VIDA and I get a TCM-0095 error code which doesn't tell me much - any ideas?

If the control unit registers that the signal from the gear selector control unit (GSM) is too low, diagnostic trouble code TCM-0095 is set.

Possible source
-Contact resistance in the connectors.
-Communication wire short-circuited to ground.

I'm no expert but it sounds like a bad connector/loose wire or something electrical rather than mechanical, new electroplate required maybe. I'd try an automatic transmission specialist. Where are you based?

thanks for the reply. I'm sure its some (hopefully simple) electrical gremlin. The lights on the gear selector occasionally come back on when driving.

I'm in South Wales, the car is booked into my local Volvo indy on Fri, although they didnt sound very hopeful of an easy fix.

I had this problem after "tinkering". Turned out the tiny connector under the gearshifter cover plate (around the shifter) had come loose. Evens the hands of a 6 year old were long or skinny enough to push it back it in though. So had to resort to using my fingers only to guide it into place.

that's where i'd check first if I had the problem again.

If it came back on after driving and given the fault code, I'd put money on it being a loose connection or wire.

You could try pulling the trim off the passenger side foot-well and see if there is space to see the connector block. It just pops off easily.

Well the garage took a look yesterday and didn't find any easy fixes (no charge though).

They would like it back and strip down the CEM and check for possible corrosion. Not sure if I'm going to take that step yet.

Sounds a bit excessive (and expensive) did you try the suggestions of checking for a loose connection, as you haven't reported any other issues, I'd assume it to be a localised fault...

well i had a poke around under the gear selector on Saturday for an hour, had a look at the board and connections that hold the lights and the 'W' button, couldnt really see much, but checked plugs were pushed home (they were), and gave them a gentle wiggle to wherever they go off to.

This morning on heading out for work, I still got the warning on the dash, but the selector lights and Geartronic now work again... How odd...

Will see how it goes & also try to clear the error in VIDA.

Thanks for the replies
