Is there a relatively easy way to gain access to this area?
I too have the "gear selector service required" message. A local (volvo specialist) garage suggested they would like to strip it down and check the control module out. They kept asking if anything had been spilt there, and said that they had never seen this error before. (I have no faith in independent volvo specialists anymore) There was another post suggesting the yellow plastic part called "the claw" might be broken. I just dont know how to get the trim off. |

Has anyone managed to successfully diagnose this fault?
My car is displaying the message "Gear Selector Service Required". The code is "TCM 0096" I have removed the wooden surround and exposed the gear selector. The yellow "claw" looks to be intact. I cant see where the wires go for access to the plug. The car works fine on the right side of the gears. Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive...All work as expected. Winter mode works as expected. However shifting to the manual mode, there is no change. Sometimes the car will show the current gear, but when you try to shift up or down, it will drop into "D". Thanks |

Assuming that all the connectors and wires are OK, this fault can be caused by a faulty gear shift selector control module.
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM-0096 is stored if the gear selector module registers that signals from the gear selector position Quickshift do not agree. Possible source -Defective gear selector control module. Fault symptom[s] -No shifting. Checking the position sensor -Ignition on -Depress the brake pedal. Move the gear selector to “Quickshift” position -Move the gear selector to + and check that the gear selection is updated in the display on the combined instrument panel. Move the gear selector to –. Check that the gear selection is updated. If not, try a new gear shift selector control module. The printed circuit board in the GSM may be faulty In position MAN the lever position signal to the gear selector module (GSM) is generated as follows: For each of the three gear selector positions a hall sensor is mounted on the printed circuit board for the gear selector control module (GSM). A permanent magnet on the lever affects the output signals from the sensors to the control module. The control module can read off the position of the lever through the differences in the signal characteristics

I have found the issue.
The ribbon cable has burned. Of course I can not see an obvious reason for this to happen. The attached files show the damage. The next question is....Can I replace just the ribbon cable? How do I get the gear shifter off so I can get access to it? THanks |

My guess is you had some chaffing and then a short to ground
That is standard ribbon cable. You could repair just the burnt wire(s) if you want Use some wire of a similar size, solder and heatshrink the joins When you reassemble, ensure no further chaffing can occur

Ok. I think I have sorted the ribbon cable. But when I pulled the great shifter off, this cable came up and i have no idea where there's two connectors go.
Anyone know? |

I think they connect to one of the solenoids itself?
I had a gear selector service requured error recently and solved it by soldering in a new circuit board that you can see in the photo. I got it off ebay from a gear lever surround that was being sold. To get to the solenoid you need to remove most of the trim that surrounds the gear lever between the seats. Lots of torx screws and a bit of time but relatively easy to do? |

Are they needed?
Mine are NOT attached but everything seems to work as expected. The message is gone. All of the gears select appropriately. manual works. I will just leave them loose until someone confirms why they are needed. |

I got it too!
Gear selector service required, that is.... (2013 S80)
It came on in my car, completely unexpectedly, and without apparent problem, when the outside temperature was minus 5C. Temperature has now reverted to what we call "normality", i.e. plus 7 or 8, and there is no sign of the warning message any more. Phew! I also have an intermittent "Parking brake Service required" message that comes and goes at will. I have referred to it elsewhere on this forum. Not planning to take it to a Volvo dealer any time soon though. Getting a bit fed up of all this so-called 'information' from my car! Patrick |
