Default v70 t5 engine fan permenatly on

I started the car the other day and noticed the engine fan was on full speed.

It goes off as you hear it winding down straight away as soon as you turn the engine off.

I've unplugged it at the fan and obviously it goes off but goes on again when reconnected.

I've made sure the car isn't actually overheating, had my heat laser gun on the thermostat housing and the top and bottom rad hoses and there fine with no overheating issues.

I've read that this could be down to a few things... One being the thermostat is stuck open..?? Temp gauge is dead on 12 o'clock as it always is.

Two.. The gas in the a/c is low

Or three...possibly a knaff relay. Hoping someone can shed some light on to what's going on.

You need to get the fan checked and probably replaced as soon as possible. This happened to me some time ago, it may have been as much as two years ago. The fan sometimes stays on for a short while after the ignition is switched off, but then switches off after a few minutes. In my case, the fan was still running at high speed two hours after I had arrived home; it was audible from a distance, not the low sound it usually made. This continued until the battery was completely drained and the car was dead. Short of disconnecting the fan every time you switch off the engine, I fear this outcome may be unavoidable.

My garage checked the fan and found that something or other had shorted/fused - I don't remember if it was the relay switch - and the only solution they could recommend was to replace the fan, which they did at reasonable cost.

Thanks for the info lillia and cheers for the link brendan.

Sorry to here you had similiar problems.seems to be quite common! Fortunetly my fan is only on when the ignition/engine is on.

Looks like there could be loads of different solutions..

I read on that link brendan there's another link suggesting low a/c gas is the culprit.

And it could just be that the fan is just faulty.

This has only just happened after re fiiting a new alternator and ps pump with belt, as I had to take the top rad hose off to get the alternator out...b

Gonni start with the simple thing first and disconnect the battery for a while and see how I go. Cheers folks will keep you's posted.

This is a great site with a wealth of info

well would you believe it...

took the neg off the battery for a few hours and that has sorted it.!

I wonder if it threw up a fault when I took the top rad pipe off previously with the coolant still warm...

food for thought though. jobs a good'n !

Thanks, I'll keep that trick in mind, it may come in handy in the future!

My goodness Brendan, has it really been that long? Seems like only yesterday... ah, memories.

Surprised me too - must be a good sign - time flies when you're having fun.
