Should I be worried -screeching noise when cold
2010/11 D5 Exec 65 thousand miles:
I’ve had my cam belt done in the past and recently had front brakes done. When the cars cold I get a screeching/wailing which increases with revs and when steeering (louder with increasing lock). As the car warms up it goes So could it be the “fan/auxiliary” belt just a bit non compliant in the cold (I thought they changed this with the cam belt) or could it be the power steering. Bottom line, my next service is in March -should I take it in sooner? I get my annual service done at Volvo dealer but major stuff done at independent. Oh and I often get “brake assist service required” and sometimes the cruise doesn’t work (won’t switch on). There’s been no fault found and this only happens if the cars been inactive for a while and presumably the battery’s low. Thank you in advance for any help/advice? |

Sounds like the power steering pump could be failing. Alternatively it could be any one of the pulleys/idlers on the aux belt. Get it sorted ASAP because if it causes the belt to break the debris will probably jam the timing belt and that will wreck the engine.
The brake assist message and the cruise control issue may be linked. The cruise control will not switch on if any of the sensors (including brakes) are not working or have intermittent faults. Get the DTCs read.

Sounds like the aux belt is slipping, which causes the noise. Also - if the system voltage is low (because the alternator is not charging) then the anti-skid is the first error message to show. The change in noise with steering also suggests the belt - it's the same one for the alternator, A/C compressor and power steering pump.
Be under no illusions - you should get this checked immediately - if the auxiliary belt snaps or frays it often takes out the cam belt as the tensioner twangs back and throws the remains of the aux belt into the cambelt housing. If that happens at best you will need a new cylinder head, at worst a whole new engine. This is, by some margin, the most common cause of early demise on the D5 engine.

All good advice but in addition I would change the power steering fluid.
I's an easy DIY job but get the correct fluid.

I have same model and year, and 68k miles.
Haven't heard any such noises from mine, so the noises you hear are probably not "normal" or expected. Hope it's sorted soon. Please let us know how you get on. |

As said already get it looked at ASAP - if is the alternator clutch pulley then will cause belt to snap soon.

Well
I phoned my local Volvo independant Sheffield and Meredith. They offered to take a look Obviously by the time I got there the noise had gone! (The car had warmed up in traffic) They checked the car over and discovered the power steering fluid was low. This, they said, could have caused the problem. They topped it up and we’ll see how it goes.... Oh and the cost -nothing. I’ll see what happens but so far no noise. |
