You don't, unfortunately. At least I couldn't when I first got the car. Pull the fuse instead as a temp fix. You can sort of reset it that way by pulling some fuses in a certain order, can't quite remember it now as it's been over a year but I'll try and find the link.

It's been 10 years since I had an 850 but I'm pretty sure with my old one that if you opened the door with the key the alarm would go off but you just got in and turned the ignition on straightaway and it disarmed the alarm until the next time it was locked with the fob. As I say it's been 10 years so I may be wrong, and there's also the possibility that Volvo used different systems over the years and yours may not be the same as mine was.

You can sometimes reprogram/reset the receiver using the existing key fob.

If ours is a 1995 then try turning the ignition switch to position I or II 5 times within 10 seconds. Leave ignition on at the fifth turn, then press either LOCK or UNLOCK button on the key fob once within 30 seconds and it should reset.

Sorry only just realised you've sorted it.

Indeed that is the only way to disable the alarm being in the ON position and lost keys .., there is a volvo special tool to revert them to disarmed . All in order to keep the security system as secure as possible . It is a wonder the dealer still had the special electronic tool !
