edit .. and then fit a good thermostat.
Been there, bought the bodge job of a 4 year old Mark II Carlton GL 2.0 i Auto ex "Lex Lease" car some 25 odd years ago ...it supposedly had a "genuine Vauxhall replacement engine"

Me thinketh not!!

By the time I finally worked out what was wrong having taken the head off, pot no 3 had partially ovalled but still maintained compression within the specs @ a totally recorded 85K miles - some mechanical numpty had not only "back engineered" the thermostat they'd also fitted the wrong length plugs - one of which had broken off an electrode which had then rattled around for thousands or more probably millions of revolutions whilst the plug itself still fired normally (work that $H1T out!!).

Word to the wise, it had fully documented Vauxhall service history.

Never bought another Vauxhall since - nor for that matter ever used Delco plugs again!

well it looks like i've got another problem with cooling system.

when i changed the thermostat i used the gasket that came with it only yo find that it's the wrong one.

the coolant is squirting/spurting out the thermostat housing due to having the wrong gasket in place.

what i mean is the gasket that came off the old thermostat was wrapped around the rim/edge of T/stat where as the new one sat in the housing with the T/stat on top.

managed to find a gasket that fits exactly the same as the old one, so i'll get that changed today & see what happens (fingers crossed).
