Default V70 Power Seat Switch Fail

Afternoon all,

Just got failed on an MOT because the fwd button on the power seat doesn't work. They've given me 10 days to sort and bring it back and they'll pass it.

Now... all the other directions are adjustable (including backwards which is controlled using the same button. And the seat does actually move fwd if you use the preset 1 (brings it all the way fwd) but apparently this isn't enough to pass MOT because it doesn't work as it should.

So my thinking is it can't be the motor because it moves forward using the preset, and I don't think it could be the switch because the backwards movement uses the same switch and that works fine (unless I'm not thinking right - not very clued up on electrics).

Anyone had this issue before/knows how to fix it? Want to hopefully sort it myself this weekend so I can get it through the MOT.

Thanks in advance...

Most probably the switch itself. Have a read of SwedishBus's excellent thread on Electric Seat Diagnosis (see post #5)

what happens is that dust , rain and dirt get down in the contacts ,
At least you have a good MOT tester .

From the MOT testers manual :

"In the case of electrically adjusted seats, it is not necessary to check that any ‘memory position’ function is working."

"Check that the driver’s seat position can be adjusted forwards and backwards and secured in the selected positions."

Reason for failure " The driver’s seat fore and aft adjustment mechanism not functioning as intended."

Bit harsh on the mot decision.
If you can show the seat moving forward with the memory button I don't see the problem.
If the seat moves forward acceptably with another button after the customer showing me I'd let it go.

It's the law , in black and white, very clearly stated ..unlike some MOT items which can be a grey area .. you can't risk your company loosing it's license ...never mind your own personal job or reputation on such a clear cut case , you ( The tester ) simply have nothing to defend yourself with ....

I've seen horn switches, wiper switches and indicator switches that have had an alternative switch fitted due to faulty original switches and as long as the customer showed it beforehand and it's within easy reach of the drivers seat.
All the items worked fine and were suitable for road use.
Nothing in the manual that says it has to be the original switch that operates the component.
Although it almost seems like half the changes in the manual now seem to change on a monthly basis almost.

There is no reason why a different switch would fail , but is is a lot of bother ..
If you take it apart you can clean the dirt out and it should be as good as new ,

I agree, I'm amazed at the effort some customers will go to change the things in the first place.
Seem to remember years ago jumping into a jag with a fault with the drivers seat, it was like something out of Christine getting jammed up against the wheel lol
