you don't have to do anything , i would think the battery is incorrectly fitted ..

ahh it's essential to have two working ones as the car is useless without a working key , but you know that of course ..

I had a similar issue. I recently bought a '04 V50 that came with two keys but one of them failed to lock and unlock the car even after I replaced the battery in the fob.

I spoke to a couple of auto locksmiths and they said that the fob had failed and needed to be replaced. They also told me that Volvo keys of the type I have can only be done by a dealer.

I had to go to the Volvo dealer in Maidstone (is that where you went?) and get a new key which was an eye watering £230.

In regard to your experience, I would be worried about the service of the dealer you went to because they didn't test the key after installing the new battery (it's a CR232 and is easy to swap). At the very least I feel that you should look at getting a new key and fob as soon as possible and keep the faulty one (I assume it still starts the car) as a spare. I would never have a car without at least two keys in case I lost one.
