Does anyone have a clue where this bolt should be, I noticed it in the bottom cover just below the starter motor, fished it out with a magnet (V70, 2003, diesel) 650 mm long

Default Answer A:

I don't know.
.... but it looks long enough to be of the type which holds alternators and A/C compressors in place.
The shank is left thread free and the threads go into the block or large adaptor.

Appears unused. Go through your old repair receipts and look for $7 bolt in the parts list. I bet the assembler dropped it and just reached for another.

Question very long bolt

Hi Willow,

Did you mean 65mm long?, was originally thinking one of the bolts that go thru the subframe into the front wishbone bush but they are longer and dont have the oversize shank near the head, does the head show signs of spannering ? it could be someone dropped a bolt onto the undertray before it was refitted, but i guess he who refitted it is the only one who might know... what size head is it ? might give a better clue ? nice pics, always helpful to see what your talking about !

It has about the same size as the side alternator bolt indeed, but the grooves near the head and the grade stamped on the head makes me think it's goes somewhere else, maybe an engine mount bolt?

In the end, may not even be from Volvo, first time I see those special grooves near the head

Looks like a stud with a bolt head screwed onto it

Thanks for the feedback, A bit over the top with my measurement!!! amazing what a nought can do !! This bolt may have been jammed in somewhere and only now appeared, the under tray was only off about 1 month ago. I have just magnified the bolt 60 x and it doesn't show any marks as from a socket or spanner, when the weather improves I will have a look around the car and maybe the Mystery will be solved !!

My Dad's brand new 340 came with a few extra nuts and bolts, I have found "extras" under carpets in other cars. It takes longer to find a lost bolt than it does to get another one.
