Winter tyres for XC90 R Design Pro?
Hi,
I am considering an R Design Pro, that comes with 275/35R22 wheels on air suspension. I tested it and like the ride, however I like to use winter, or at least 'all season' tyres in the winter as I find the handling so much better in the wet, even if deep snow is rare in the UK these days. I am struggling to find suitable tyres on 22" rims, and would like to avoid expense of a second set of wheels (although I appreciate would be better for winter driving with a higher profile..). Has anyone found suitable tyres, or is aware of future ones as rims get increasingly large? Thoughts welcomed! Thanks, John |

Am I right thinking that it's a new xc90? I'm selling a full set of 18s with Nokian winter tyres that I bought for my old SC 90 SE Sport but I guess they will have a different fitting?

quick update on this
I contacted a few of the main manufacturers (Conti., Michelin, Pirelli...). Pirelli are launching (should be out by now) a Scorpion Winter in this size, the others have no plans to. So choice of ~1 it seems, unless you want to add expense of a new set of wheels! I was a little unsure of the 22" wheels , hope I don't come to regret the choice! Just been driving my old car in the snow and sleet on 19" wheels and very glad indeed I have all season tyres on. John |

Am I right in thinking you have to stick with the same tyre size if changing to winter tyres? My T8 has rediculous 22" tyres (bought the car ex demo) and its proving very hard to find suitable winter tyres.

The important thing is to try and maintain rolling circumference, also look at the range of wheel and tyre combinations on other model xc90's and find a set up use by the manufacturer. Wheel size would be better sacrificed for a higher profile tyre with winters in my opinion. Having just changed in the last 2 weeks from a 2016 Q7 which came with standard 20's I dropped down to a manufactures setup on 19's. My problem now is forgetting I am in a v90 and not a q7 when it come to kerbs, I ve got to watch them now.
I would add I totally agree with you on winters, you still come across the misinformed who think they are for snow. The increase in braking distances, when temperatures drop, when using summer tyres as opposed to gains in stopping efficiency when using winters is a no brainer. What gets me is people think they have a 4x4 (intelligent people as well) that it will help them stop! |

Normally you fit Winter wheels and tyres
My XC90 has 20" Summer wheels and 17" Winter wheels, with corresponding tyre sizes so that the diameter is the same. The Winter wheels and tyres are narrower for better traction in snow, and also offer a nicer ride than the Summer wheels due to the larger sidewalls
