I'll take that offer up if you can find it.

I can't PM you because I'm a newbie - can you PM me an email address and then we can sort out reimbursement etc.?

It could possibly also be the ignition amplifier module, hidden on the left hand inner wing behind the headlamp and further obscured by the air filter box.

I'm surprised it hasn't been totally confusing and started up at it's position down the road from you, at least that would enable you to get it home!

Ash did an excellent write up in another thread on how to test/diagnose the crank sensor, ignition amplifier and coil, if i could remember where it was i'd link to it - can you remember Ash? Maybe copy & paste it over onto this one?

If memory serves correctly the car in question had similar symptoms and had three dodgy components causing it, the crank sensor, ignition amp and also the MAF - he did have extra symptoms of holding back during driving and bad idling though which was the MAF.

Thought I would come back with an update.

Fitted the crankshaft sensor that GreenBrick kindly sent me and the motor burst into life straight away.

The original sensor had significant damage to the outer sheath, but no damage to the inner screened wires that I could see - but replacing it seems to have cured it, so I guess there was something wrong with it somewhere.

Many thanks to all who contributed advice, especially GreenBrick for sending the part to me.

Sorry Dave - late to this party.

Phil - Glad to see its fixed. I'd replace the amp as well as a matter of course (knowing what I now know).
