They will put advisories on that we think are daft as a way of covering their own backs. So in your case you could have leaking brake fluid or petrol tank, the advisory is so if it was leaking either and it caused a crash and you said it had just had an MOT with no mention of these then the tester can be prosecuted. Just like undergrad and engine covers are advisory items as they cannot see some important components.

Daft advisory,,load of tosh,,call it what you like..Truth is in today's day and age its all too easy to put blame onto other's regardless of it being the motor trade or any other trade.
For the MOT,the tester is encouraged to pass comment or advise simply as a paper trail should a problem arise in the future or to give the vehicle presenter the knowledge that an issue is on the horizon

I had an advisory on one car warning me that the underside had been rustproofed, phew, glad they told me!

A tester can put whatever he wants on an advisory. I've had.... 'Driver smells strongly of Lynx Africa'

That should never be an advisory, more like an immediate fail.

I always used to view advisories as the testers way of saying 'It's legit for now but it will need doing soon', unfortunately in this litigious, box ticking age it seems to have become a way that the tester has to cover his backside from sulky customers and officialdom. I'm pretty sure the place I use has also 'failed' my car for a sidelight bulb (I always have a walk round and count the lights before I take it in), done a 'free repair', then passed it, just to make his stats look good for the officials.

edit: Ought to add that the place I use is a local independent. Compared to the nonsense that certain chains come up with complete with an associated over inflated repair bill I'll stick with Mr Local, but if the DVLA are comparing the fail rate at the chain with the local fail rate he would probably look rather lax in his testing.

Wise choice, I once made the mistake of using Linx "Dark Temptation" & was inundated by attention from the opposite sex

Unlucky you. My L'Oreal Men Expert Sensitive Control 48H Deodorant brings me attention from the same sex.
