A traffic cop neighbour told me of an RTA he attended where a Volvo driver had been tee boned at a junction. Driver was sat in the car, dead as a dodo with not a mark on him. The autopsy revealed the side impact caused his heart to swing inside his chest cavity and ripped the autor artiery out of the heart, he died due to internal bleeding within minutes.
Doesn't matter what you drive, Volvo's may be safer but you can still die. Paul. |

Even Volvos bold promise of “no one will die in a Volvo by 2020” will stop the sudden shock of an impact reorganising internal organs.

In Manchester it's Audis that seem to have permission to drive through red lights. See it all too often when picking my eldest up from Uni.

from a different perspective......
Perhaps the reason more people are jumping red lights is the complete and utter idiocy of the numbers and frequency of lights clogging up our highways. Its an infestation. Very slowly, many roundabouts are being destroyed by lights or even replaced. What complete idiot thinks that a set of lights is a better solution than a proper roundabout? Middle of the night? You must stop No traffic? You must stop All the while putting out the spawn of the devil, emissions while idling. Traffic lights are an evil that must only be deployed when no other form of junction is possible and the sooner we adopt the American idea of left turn on a red the better. After all, the whole point of a road is to get from A to B. Anything else is secondary.

I have to say.. It made me think.
I didn't realise what or why I was doing, nevertheless quite often I had to calm visiting Poles down in respect to London's traffic. Say- my bro in law, my godparents. Anyone visiting and not staying for long had one and sane complaint: There's no movement on streets. Gridlock. Standstill. And my reply always was: how many accidents were there in your (much smaller in any case) city/town in last year? Because here, focus is on keeping people alive. And if it comes at cost of everyone taking their time to make a trip- so be it. But they'll make it alive. Do I have to bring up figures of accidents, pedestrian deaths, red lights crossed at 2* allowed speed and so on of Poland? I don't want to. But I can. I'm glad that its different here. I'm sorry that there are folks thinking that its "good" to drive trough on red. But then, it may well be that some planner didn't think it trough. That there's too many lights about. What can one do? We all know that our hand are tied by whoever is in charge at the moment. Either accept or break the law.

A very nice email came back from the senior highways planner saying that obviously they knew best & that the traffic would flow far better than before. Now every morning & evening there's massive queues in the morning back onto the A19 & every evening from Nissan up to the A19. Emailed the planner back basically saying 'Told you So' as did many others. We got a reply saying it was teething problems with the timing of the lights. now 3 years on we have the same issues. The other thing is they installed so many sets of lights controlling the junction visitors haven't a clue if they should stop or go.

We had a very similar situation in a town about 20 miles from where I live. (Harvey 1512 will know exactly where I mean).
There was a mini roundabout at the end or the Main Street where the main road went to the right, over a bridge, while another road that led to a new supermarket ran straight ahead. The county council spent thousands in removing the roundabout and installing traffic lights, saying that the expected increase in traffic from the supermarket development meant that the old layout would not cope. In the event, the delays were legendary; 20 minutes to cross the bridge into town was not unknown - people took to jumping the lights, there were many minor accidents and town centre trade was seriously affected. Eventually, after several months, and under huge pressure, the council agreed to a “temporary” reinstatement of the roundabout and the problems disappeared. They never admitted that the scheme had been a disaster.
