Default Help with c70 choice

We have an xc60 2016 2.4(220) geartronic and are looking to buy a c70 around eight to ten years old in the near future. Is there anythings to look for or avoid in a c70. Are there certain engines configurations to avoid or choose. How do people who already have c70 feel about them? Does the dreaded dpf horrify you as it does me? Which engines give the most problems/ which give the least?
How does the satnav that seems to be fitted to a lot of cars that age with maps on a hard disk fair? How do you get updates for europe?
Any help would be appreciated. It is to be a second car for my wife so she keeps her hands off my/ our xc60!

Happy to chip in here, being on my second one of these.

Engines - definitely avoid the Ford 2.0D because it's underpowered in a car of this weight, and the manual ones of these have the dreaded 'wet' DPF with a 75k service life and 37.5k additive refill interval. The Powershift automatic (again, Ford) on that engine has the 'dry', lifetime DPF but the 'box is quite enough trouble on its own to make up for it.

Stick to a Volvo 5-cylinder engine and you'll get better driving and reliability. The D5's all have the 'dry' DPF which is fine, the manual is a great drive if you like to press on, the Geartronic auto is more relaxed but noticeably thirstier. However neither version will take kindly to short runs/town use without regular longer runs to allow the DPF to regenerate.

The petrols are the 2.4i which is known for being bulletproof, and the T5 turbo, the economy is very similar from both (in manual or Geartronic form), so the T5 actually makes sense, although at that age you'd need proof that it's been well looked after.

There was a minor refresh of the interior in MY2008, earlier gremlins like wheel bearings and the ignition key socket were also sorted by then and if it's important to you, AUX and integrated Bluetooth handsfree preparation started to appear in the options. My old one didn't have satnav (so sorry but I don't know about updates or Europe maps), but I believe it wasn't great - you may just have to stick to a separate unit. The MY2008/2009 cars are probably the best ones to go for, as the price difference over the earlier model years isn't all that great now.

In general, the trim levels are S, Sport, SE and SE Lux. The T-tec seat fabric on the Sport tends to rip and be expensive to repair. Decent spec starts with the SE, and the SE Lux had a wonderful Dynaudio sound system as standard, although its 18" wheels give a less refined ride than the 17" on the SE and Sport if the roads aren't in great condition.

Whatever model you go for, this is a heavy car on a MkII Focus chassis, so watch out for suspension wear at higher mileages. Get one with the Xenon headlights if you want to see where you're going after dark. The space-saver spare is also much more likely to get you home than the bottle of gloop and inflator kit.

Good luck with your search!

Everything that Proghound said plus the Satnav is useable, if a bit clunky, even by 2008 standards. The nav disc is updatable to 2016 but I don't think any later updates will be made available.
The Geartronic auto gearbox is merely "OK" IMO.
Had ours for 3 years & still love it
