Default 1800ES Exhaust Back Box

My 73 ES needs a new exhaust back box. A quick wander along the shelves at the local motor factor has turned up a Vauxhall Astra/Belmont box which is the same width and depth, just around 3" longer, with only a single rather than double exit pipe.

I'm not too worried about total authenticity, it's £14, so my question is it worth a punt? Or does anyone have any experience of any other box that might fit?

Cheers

Jack

PS: If I may, a plug for the local motor factors - Andrew Page - very helpful people!

if its 3" too long it might foul on the rear valance. The cut out in the rear valance is for the tailpipes not the box so there will be insufficient clearance. However if you can push the new box farther onto the centre pipe than the old one was, that might take care of some of the 3" you have to lose. Also don't forget the rear exhaust bracket (which is crucial to stop the exaust knocking at the back) is designed to clamp onto two tail pipes, not one. It will hold the box up one one pipe but it won't hold it as securely so the box will bounce up and down more. I've fitted incorrect back boxes myself, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
