Default Rear window not working - suggested diagnosis?

I've had my S80 for about two months, not had his problem before and yesterday when opening the windows the PSR window made a loud 'clonk' when fully down, which I took to indicate a future problem... & today it made the same sound and wouldn't go back up.

I've since removed the door trim, switches etc & was able to manually push the window up, a step at a time, with some help from the motor.

When I operated the switch the motor would bring the glass down, but much slower than usual.

AIUI there are only two parts that can be a problem, the plastic connector, or the motor assembly/unit and as the window will still move down correctly without slipping out of its holder I'd assume it's the motor assembly.

From posts on here it looks like this is a semi-common issue?

Does that sound like a fair diagnosis or has anyone else found something similar caused by another piece of the mechanism?

On reading your report my conclusion was the opposite of what you concluded...lol...
I base this on some limited experience of window faults. If the motor is working ( disconnected from the mechanism) the issue is the mechanism..
Additionally I've never heard a motor make a bang or clunk noise, but I have with the mechanism. If mechanism is slightly out of alignment motor may not be strong enough to push/pull the glass.
I'd check if motor runs well away from mechanism and go from there.
Cheers Bob.

Good suggestion and one I'd obviously not considered.

So it looks like step one is to take the motor out and check it works without it trying to life the weight of the glass... something for the bk hol to do list, perhaps!?!

I'll get the tools ready.
