That's how I understood it too that it's an offence to exceed the MTPLM rather than just not advised. Thanks for the recommendation of going to the manufacturer, in this case Hymer. There are 2 companies that deal with Eribas here, one helpful and the other that goes in to full defensive mode when you mention it's imported. The helpful one has told me they know of no differences but have been in contact with Hymer for me to confirm it. Hymer have told them there are differences, but have been totally unhelpful in providing a list of what it is which is complete rubbish as I'm prepared to pay the money to alter it! All said, even with the lower MTPLM and despite having been retro fitted with battery, mover and spare wheel I still have a reasonable payload; I would just prefer to put the bikes inside the caravan rather than on my roof. PS: Apologies to the original poster for turning your enquiry into all about me!
