Have you got seats in the boot? If so, you should have a handle on the inside. Here's some info on repairing faulty lock: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...light=Tailgate

Handle will be seized - use something flat to push it back, lock / unlock and the boot should open - very common XC90 issue. There's a fix on this site!

The inside handle to open the rear tailgate from inside the vehicle is only fitted in the USA market cars, as this is mandated by law.
Canadian cars may also get the same inside handle.

European cars do not need the handle by law, and thus the European XC90 tailgate cannot be opened from inside the vehicle. Unless you specified or retrofitted the inside handle...

Interesting. It's standard on UK V/XC70's of a similar vintage with 7 seat option so not sure why they'd choose to treat them differently. I think in the US they had to fit handles to saloon cars like S60 even though you would not normally tend to stuff passengers in the boot. I seem to recall hearing it was on the off change you were bundled into the boot by some kidnapper or something equally daft!

EDIT: no, I'm not making it up! http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles...your-car-trunk

In the U.K. the tailgate has to be able to be opened from inside the car if it is an exit route for passengers. Hence on XC and V70 7 seat models where the additional 2 seats are in the luggage area - there is a handle. On the XC90 where all 7 passengers board/alight by the main doors it is not needed. FYI the interior tailgate handle on 7 seat 70s is also an MOT testable item.

have you got it sorted yet? Mine does the same, I simply push the handle towards the front of the car as it should sit by default, then press unlock on remote. then press handle to open the boot.

I will ultmately need to replace the rod as permanent fix
