Question Replacing Sat Nav Drive.

The previous owner jammed a CD in the drive unit and damaged the mechanism, beyond repair. I have purchased a complete drive unit from a breakers and I need some advice about installing it.
If I install the complete unit will it be necessary to re-programme the ECU and, if so, how do I do it? OR would it be easier to replace the CD drive module with the CD drive module from the unit that I have just bought.
Both options a bit scary so any advice will be much appreciated.

Replace only the mechanism and you will be fine, no programming required.

Work on a bright lit worksurface (eg dining room table)
Work slowly and carefully, take photos of the mech before you disassemble

You should be able to unbolt the mech, unplug one cable, and then remove the entire mech from inside the nav

Replacement, as they say, is a reversal of removal.

Question

Great to have such a quick response, thank you. Many months ago, when I first investigated repairing the unit, I seem to remember that the drive module was connected to the reader/ processor by a multitude of snap on terminal blocks which I was loath to disconnect, Are you saying that I should not disturb those connections and only exchange the mechanical sub assembly?
Many thanks

Hi Swiss XC90. sorry to bother you again but I have gritted my teeth and started to strip my damaged unit. I have got to the point where I can take the disc drive out of the casing but it still has at least 2 pcb's fixed to it and I have had to disconnect 3 ribbon connectors to be able to separate it from the other pcb's. Frankly I do not know how to proceed. One of the visible pcb's attached to the disc drive is retained by 3 metal twist tags which I have undone and the board is free, apart from two wires soldered directly to a disc drive motor, I cannot remove the board without cutting the wires, which I do not want to do
Could you possibly take a look at the photo attached and see if you can offer any advice.
Many thanks Ron
