Thanks very much for that Ian, it's great to get to know local people with knowledge.

Update: dropped my car off at Volmech tonight - Paul on the front desk is a really nice bloke. I drove a courtesy car back. What a damp squib lol. No fault of the garage obviously but I thought a 1.8 petrol S40 would've been quite lively. I mean it drove ok but not a patch on the S60 D5, prettly gutless infact. A quick look under the bonnet and it's got the Mitsubishi GDI engine. Are all the petrol S40's (bar the T4) slow with no oomph?

Based on this model, I'm so so pleased I bought a D5.

The gdi was the worst of the bunch. The Volvo 1.8 and 2.0 litres go quite well. I had the 1.6 s40 again a volvo engine which was ok but it drank petrol like no 2mora! That range of cars the s and v 40s of 2000 onwards are probably one of the most reliable volvos. I miss my old s40 it was a hell of a car and only sold it because of the fuel consumption

Thanks Graham, handy to know. I've had loads of petrol cars and only a couple of diesels. I know petrols are smoother with hardly any vibration but it's a great feeling when putting your foot down and the turbo kicks in and you're off! It's addictive (to me anyway). I wouldn't rule out a petrol turbo in the future, but I imagine the fuel consumption is pretty dire.

A T4 or T5 Volvo will definitely hurt you in the wallet department. Wonderful engines though.

Update: Took the courtesy car back to Volmech and collected mine with all he parts fitted I gave them. The aux belt is running straight and true now, relief. The old alt pulley wasn't the clutch type and was the suspect in the wandering of the belt.

The bill came in cheaper than origianlly quoted at £108 inc the vat, bonus. I was originally quoted £120+ vat as they thought I wanted timing belt kit fitted too.

On the return trip, I even got used to the petrol S40. It just needed a good run on the A66 and more revs than my D5 to bring it alive.

So, all in all, I'd highly recommend Volmech in Thornaby and would definitely use them again

Glad you got that sorted out, no more out of line belt and peace of mind.

Me too haha. Maybe I'm a bit OCD when I get a newer car but I just want it running spot on as it's a cracking car and hope to keep it for years. It's a real credit to previous owners.

Hello
I used them about 2 weeks ago, yes, not the cheapest, I could have gone to a back street place and got the work done for less BUT
They knew what they were doing and were able to talk me through the issues
I have absolute confidence in them
They were honest about their prices
A thumbs up from me
