Warm welcome from a recent "newbie" - to the 200 bit at least since acquiring a '78 265!

Nice looking honest car you have there, and in a relatively unusual colour. Very best wishes for many happy miles in it.

I can certainly echo above comments that you will find this a most helpful and friendly forum, don't forget to check out the "Lounge" area for all sorts of chat - and the "General" forum for more car related, but still relevant stuff.

As for the model designation numbers - well I own either a 260 estate, or a 265, and a 960 estate - or is that a 965??! In general folks on here tend to refer to their cars using the "xx4" or "xx5" designation just as a shorthand to describe it as a saloon or estate.

In any event, welcome - and enjoy.

Nice intro and the car looks good!

I wonder if you're free this weekend? The Northern Volvo Club meeting is on this Sunday at Wetherby race course. Non-members are welcome to attend.

It's not a huge show usually (the national was a few weeks ago) but well worth as visit.

It would be good to meet you and see the new arrival.

Thanks for all the welcomes I'm glad to be here, it's great that there are so many enthusiasts all together in the same place,

Thanks for the offer John, I am interested in going to meets but unfortunately I'm working this weekend and even if I wasn't working I'm waiting for some replacement brake lines, the drivers side caliper pistons are struggling to retract, I've got some new hoses on order so that should cure it,

And great info on the model designation numbering system! I wish I had known earlier it would have saved me a lot of heart ache with insurance!

Has any one had any issues with their fuel/temp gauge? Neither of mine work, I've traced the circuit out and everything looks ok except this little fella,





It is the voltage regulator which is common to both gauges, I have voltage to it, and the circuit from it is complete, so it looks like it's the culprit, I've looked on the internet & it looks like it's a regulator that's used on VW too and it can cause issues on them, I found a replacement on eBay.....

TaDa a working fuel gauge, I didn't get chance to give her a run but I'm confident the temp gauge will work!

So I fixed the regulator in properly, I had to make up an adaptor block to hold the heat sink in place because the replacement regulator pin configuration is a reverse of the original so it had to be mounted with the heat sink tab on the wrong side, of course the old screw wasn't long enough but luckily I have a few 3mm screws kicking around from an old hobby, I made up the adaptor block from some 3mm thick aluminium sheet I had in the garage,

So fixed in place


A short run,


And success,


Both gauges working!

And I almost forgot, I did something else very important today.....

Well today has been a mixed day, I took my family to visit my parents (only a few miles but any excuse to get out). When packing everyone in for the return journey I noticed paint on the front passenger side wheel arch, it looks like some one has scraped past it, was it me squeezing into my garage? I don't know but whatever I'm annoyed. So off we set and suddenly my son was feeling ill in the back seat, before we could arrive home we had a full on vomit situation, (this is the second time he's been out on my new volvo!) luckily most was contained in a plastic bag but there was a little 'dispersal' so when we arrived home he was bundled upstairs by the mrs and I got the bucket out, I cleaned the seats with some anti bacterial stuff so hopefully I'll be ok, whilst the bucket was out I gave it a once over



I was looking at the wheel arch, then I remembered seeing some touch up paint in the boot when I first bought the car,



Authentic touch up paint, brilliant! Whilst in the boot I also found some 'lead replacement additive' I was under the impression that my 84' 244 dl with it's 2.1 liter petrol engine wouldn't require lead substitute? I've done around 100 miles in it since I bought the car and haven't put any additive in yet do I need to? How do I find out if the car requires lead substitute additive? It's quite clear that the previous owner had been using it, on this page http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/200reg.shtml and it said-

With the price of petrol constantly increasing the only alternative for those still using 4-star is to change to unleaded. For some cars the conversion is simple; for others it is costly and if your annual mileage is not high then it may not be financially viable. For some there is no conversion available. My 1981 2.1 litre injection engine was designed to run on the old 2-star (all the 2.1 engines were) so no conversion is necessary

This to me reads that additive isn't required?
