Engine: TDI: Another brakes in the wall !

Hy Foxes,

Grrrr ! I have a problem I can't solve.

Recently (September), I've changed my fronts brakes pads and disks. Never changed them since I bought the car, 4 years ago. They were started to make some noise... So.

Here comes the trouble. I've changed the pads and disks (280 mm). I've replace the brake fluid completely by new one. But since, each time I brake, the steering wheel gives a little jerk on the side.

I've removed the pads and ordered new ones from skandix (volvo genuine).I've replace the brake fluid a second time. Same thing. I've changed the stabilizer rods, thinking it could have to matter. The trouble is still there. Disks seem to be fine.

A tie rod out ? Have to change the disks again ? some air still in the circuit ?

Any idea ?

Wishbone bushes. Which ever way it pulls it will be that side that needs changing.

Another vote for wishbone bushes. Change them pronto, as you'll be trashing the tyres until you do. Not too hard to do, just make sure you tighten the arm pivot bolts up while the arm is under load or you'll be doing it again soon (ask me how I know....)

You have two options, either replace the bushes with polybushes (can be a fight to get the old ones out) but only if the ball joint is in perfect condition, as you can't change that on its own. Or, change the whole arm (preferred) but if you do, get decent ones, the Meyle HD ones from PFV come recommended by me. The Meyle HD ones have bushes that are very similar in material to polybushes anyway, i.e. strong and tough. Again, if you get cheap ones you'll be doing the job again quite soon, they take quite a load on these front-heavy cars and cheapies just aren't up to the job for long. Personally I'd do both, but if you have to change only one you'll be able to check which one by using a lever between the body and the arm where it pivots, there should be virtually no movement at all in any plane.

You will have to set up the tracking when it's done, as it WILL be out. I use a Gunson Trakrite to do this (very easy and very accurate) or you can get a tyre place to do it, but in my experience they often get it wrong, or the steering wheel isn't straight afterwards.

Thank for reply. I'm afraid that you're right. The thing is that I made the paralellism on Monday. The repairer told me there was an problem about one degree inside the volvo recommandation... A clown, in fact, this repairer. 100 bocks thrown by the window, at the end " Dear customer, you have a fog light that doesn't work" he said. Arrived at home I saw the bulb was not connected ...

As you said, order and replace the wishbones bushes without knowing if the ball joint is in perfect condition could be a loose of time money.

I will follow your advice and change the controls arms, both, from LEMFÖRDER. I don't want to run any risk, because this marvelous car uses to carry wife and kids.

I've looked to PFV. Did I chose the rights ones ?



The ones that are installed date from 2014. I have done everything to have no mechanic to do on winter, but it seems that I will be oblige to. I can forget my set of superheroes ordered for Christmas !

With control arms/wishbone, ONLY buy Volvo genuine, or Lemforder branded items (they make them for Volvo afaik). I was thinking about getting Meyle HD and some folk say they are OK. But just found that both my Meyle track rod ends (25k/2 years old) have slight play already, and I replaced inner + outer at same time.

Such a pain that the ball joint is not replaceable, was thinking of getting some of the old 850 wishbone (replaceable balljoint!) and putting plastic/delrin/poly bushs into them
