Strange Problem
Hi, I had strange problem this evening. I wanted to start the car. You know before starting the warning lights light up. This time it did not happen. Car fired up correctly. I left the car to warm up little bit. When I went back the car, I realized that rpm was higher than usual about 1200, when I did step on break, rpm went zero but car was still running and gas gauge was slowly going lower. When I released the break pedal, rpm came back. I did try again, I had the same behaviour. Then I stopped the car. What could be the reason? Relay? Bad grounding? Any idea? Thanks

Hi,
Is the battery fully charged and the alternator doing its thing? With the engine running you should get 14v across the battery terminals with all lights etc. off and at least 12v with everything possible turned on. I've noticed with a couple of my Volvo's that that things like fuel gauges and panel lights start to read low if the battery / alternator are not 100% and the engine seems to run at a higher tick over possibly trying to compensate. Failing that I would check earths. Good luck, LeeP |

Ignition switch failure is the most likely.
You'll need a new switch (Volvo call it a starter switch) and it's fairly simple to change once you remove the cowling from the top of the steering column. Two screws hold the switch on the end of the ignition lock, unplug the electrical connector, fit the new one by plugging into the connector, sliding onto the end of the ignition barrel and refitting the screws and finally the cowling. If i can find them i have some photos showing the procedure. Note that ignition switches can often be found on ebay, however they are not all the same and to make sure you get the right one you'll need to go to Volvo - it will also last longer than a pattern part from ebay!

I will check battery first. My Volvo has not been used for more 10 days. Additionally the weather is really cold these days. A month ago, I checked alternator, it was good. If I can, I will try on Sunday, and see what will happen. Thanks guys.
