Have the dizzy and leads been changed before or since you have had the car? It sounds like it might be in that area. If the crank sensor is failing, you will see the RPM guage on the dash fall dramatically, but obviously difficult to watch while driving. You might want a look at this. http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index...n-with-my-car/

Crank sensors can and do fail when hot (the coil windings short internaly). High temps increase the resistance and the signal back to the ECU becomes weak. That said internal corroded cables also increace resistance under heat. To eliminate the sensor goin open circuit when hot, as soon as the miss firing starts use freeze spray on the sensor. If normal running returns replace sensor. If this test dose not give a result then volt drop test the sensor harnes back to the ECU for a high rsistance fault.

Had a root around this evening to see if there was anything obvious and also to clean some of the contacts. Found this pipe going nowhere:

another view ('scuse the fingers)

I can't see anywhere obvious for it to go. Any suggestions?

In addition there's also this cable which isn't secured - the one with the orange thing and lots of tape.

The orange thing looks like a one way valve. The car will stutter and run horribly if this is unplugged [they appear on carburettor engines]but this one looks like it read volumetric pressure and the tape looks like its trying to seal a split another really common problem in vacuum hoses as they go stiff then tear, as for the clear pipe looks like a previous owner has tried to fix a problem with good old fashioned aquarium airline hose.

Thanks for the reply. What looks like clear pipe in the first photo is actually normal black pipe - it's just the reflection from the flash. I'll trace the pipe that's attached to the valve and see if it's an easy fix. I just need to find where the pipe in the first pictures is supposed to go.

The unit the pipe is connected to looks like the turbo control valve, this is usually mounted to on a clip on the side of the air filter next to the MAF sensor.

In your second smaller photo you can just see a connection to the induction pipework with a white pipe (with black elbow) connected to it.

Your mystery pipe should be connected there, the white pipe belongs somewhere else.

Maybe a wider photo would help, but things don't look right with the pipework.

Any aftermarket induction parts fitted?

Thanks Chris. Just had a closer look and the third picture with the orange fitting is an electrical cable and feeds into the bulkhead.
I took a couple more pictures of the other pipe:

The unit that the pipe is plugged in to:

I found the clip on the side of the airbox and also another connection on the induction pipework. Would the pipe fix on to there?

Here's a wider view:

Hi,

yes I believe the spare hose from your turbo control valve does connect the turbo intake pipe where your blue circle is. On my 850 the other stub on that pipe is blanked off so I don't know why yours has a rubber elbow and the white pipe coming off it - maybe someone with more knowledge on the V70s can confirm.

I also don't recognise the orange one-way valve pipework so can't help their either, sorry :-(

Cheers, Pete

The valve should be fitted to the side of the air filter and I think you have correctly identified the location for the 'spare' pipe.

Thanks for your help guys. Drove around 30 miles to the station this morning and I'm still getting the missing and stalling issues so it's back to the garage tomorrow. If it's not sorted after that then I'm going to have to take it to an auto electricians.
