Default Temp Gauge not moving.

Helow.. This is my first posting, and have recently purchased a volvo 440.

The temperature gauge on my volvo 440 1.8 M reg has stopped moving. There is also a slight leak on the radiator hose connected to the engine (this will be replaced). How could I tell if the engine is over heating? Is it safe to continue driving the car?. Any advice will be appreciated.

Let it idle and get hot but monitor it all the time. Make sure it does not boil and see if the rad fan cuts in. If it does you have a gauge or sensor fault and it is not overheating.

Paul.

Thanks for that. Two days ago the temperature gauge started working again, without warning, then stopped. So now it works when it feels like it. The fan cuts in when the engine is hot and the car is running fine. However when I get time I will get the sensor checked out. I am happy to be driving a volvo..

I have the same problem...I ignore it, as it will work when it wants too. Try cleaning all connectors...it may work :-)

Default A bit dense

I am probably being a bit dense but is the engine temperature sensor the one that is plugged into the RH side of the radiator (looking from the front of a 440 1.8 LE)? Thanks for any advice
