Default Propshaft centre bearing/exhaust manafold studs

Afternoon all, pulled the whole of my exhaust off to replace yesterday, while down there checked the centre bearing (Bearing inside rubber housing) there is a fair amount of vertical and lateral play as if the rubber has started to fail so I am going to replace, other than volvo any other brand recommended? Secondly I would like to replace the 3 manifold studs (manifold to down pipe) but to do this it looks like it would be easyer with the manifold off the head.If I did this I would change the studs in the head as well. What tricks do I need to
know to do that and if successful could I replace with S/S socket cap screws?

What size is your propshaft? There are two, 45mm and 75mm - here are links to both :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FITS-VOLV...G/233410182762

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Vauxh...m/252154914255

They are complete, you slide the old one off and the new one on, no messing around fitting bearings into supports etc.

Once fitted, take it for a short test drive and check there is no vibration - if there is, nopte the speed it happens.

Go home, crawl under (without jacking it up!) and loosen the 4 bolts holding the beearing carrier to the floorpan by half a turn each.

Go for a short test drive, GENTLY accelerating to the speed the vibration happen and confirm it doesn't.
Return home gently and retighten the 4 bolts. a small amount on each at a time in turn until set to the correct torque again.

Take for a confirmation test drive that all is now well.

If not repeat the undo the 4 bolts half a turn each bit etc.

Answer to the Question is I do not Know and will not find out till next week, when I haul it out the garage and put it back on the axle stands to look at fitting the exhaust. I am at work Mon/Tues so it will not be until the middle of the week so by the time I receive the centre bearing it will be the week after when everything gets fitted. Exhaust/Bearing/gear box mount . Then move on to something else. All good.

About time you did that gearbox mount, you've had it long enough!

Joking aside, prop centre bearing is relatively easy. While you're under there, check the seal and bush in the gearbox extension housing, often if the prop bearing is FUBAR, so are they.

Usually after draining the box (i'm guessing it's auto here) and removing the prop, you can unbolt the extension housing (undo the flange centre bolt first and pull the flange out) by removing 6-7 bolts and pull it off.
You can easily tap the seal out with a long drift aand the same for the bush.

The new bush has grooves in the outside to line up with oilways and holes to let the oil through onto the output shaft (but inside the seal), make sure you line the grooves etc up properly.

Gaskets are tricky to find, Volvo have them but a 2 week wait so i used gasket paper. Sprayed the back of the gasket paper with carpet glue and placed the extension housing on top until it set.

Then trimmed round the outer edge with a Stanley knife, same on the inside and used the ball of a ball-pein hammer to tap out where the holes are. Refitted it followed by the flange and bolt and the propshaft with the new bearing.
Refilled the ATF with fresh and put the rest back as it should be. World of difference (after sorting some vibration from the prop as described above) and much smoother.

Which gaskets are you after Hylton? Manifold to head or manifold to downpipe?

The manifold to head should be the same for the majority of red blocks. Can't remember if it's 4 individual gaskets or one linked one. Using the part number it's 4 separate gaskets and the best price i found was a pre-packed set of 4 :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Febi-Bils...2/362992872301

Not sure if the original manifold nuts were locking, if so they certainly wouldn't have been Nylocs because of the heat so something like Aerotites would be my guess.

four separate gaskets - take care placing them its easy to get them frack to brunt. Ask me how I know...

Use copper nuts - go hog-crazy and splash out on new ones you impetuous boy. They are rolled on one face making them look like a nyloc. Use copper grease to make your life easier next time.
