I'm not overly surprised by this; whilst independents will have lower overheads than main dealers they still have to make a profit, and markup on parts will contribute towards this.

yes for the last 5 years most independents are getting as close to the volvo prices as they dare.

On the positive they say they cleaned out the inlet manifold which had to come off and did not add additional time , at least this is what they are telling me! Whatever, they were real nice and squeezed me in as I desperately needed car fixed.

I've just been quoted £1,260 for pads+discs all round + brake fluid. Rough breakdowns below:
Brake fluid replace = £75

Front pads + discs = £628-ish, where

Labour 129 + flange screw 4 + a pair of brake disc kit 342 + brake pad kit 141

Rear pads + discs = £556-ish, where

Labour 187 + pair of brake disc 259 + brake pad kit 110
Down to inflation?

I was frankly astounded to be quoted £276 for rear pads replacement. I actually thought they had quoted for discs and pads but no, that's just for pads. Cost breaks down as 0.9 hours labour at £140/hr + VAT and c.£100 for the parts.

I am unable to do this work myself so time to look for a decent independent for this type of work methinks.
Main dealers are a rip off. £140 per hour labour alone is literally double what an independent would charge.

Definitely, go to an independent. You have no reason to go to a main dealer for a brake disc/pad change.

Stoneacre then?

If you have a modicum of mechanical ability you can do it yourself. You can even use Volvo bits and order online from TMS at a decent discount. Best guesstimate would be about 500 quid for all the original Volvo bits from TMS. The fluid change is most likely also unnecessary.

Oh BTW Stoneacre have a habit of recommending unnecessary work. So maybe it is all not needed. Mine is a T8 but front disks weren't done until 120k miles.

Interestingly local Kwik-fit refuses to do a quote stating the last XC90 they did they ended up having to pay Volvo a couple of hundreds to reset the e-handbrake...

So it seems rip-off everywhere...

I think that says more about kwik fit than the car. Plenty on here have done rear pads with no issues (me included).
