Default 2004 S60 factory bi-fuel problem resolved

Just thought I'd post an update regarding my previously posted problems when running my S60 factory bi-fuel on LPG.

To recap, I was experiencing the typical problems of the car stuttering and losing power when running on LPG. The problem was so bad that I had to switch over to petrol when pulling out of junctions or entering a roundabout for fear of the car stalling. Another problem that could occur was the engine cutting out when braking to turn off at a junction, leaving me with no servo assistance on the brakes or steering.

I went down the usual route of having the LPG fuel distributor cleaned out to no avail. I also considered changing the coil packs and stepper motor but didn't go down this route since I was of the opinion that the problem didn't necessarily lie with the LPG system even though it only exhibited itself when running on LPG.

Anyway, the problem came to a head in the summer when after driving 150 miles down the motorway without problem I pulled off for fuel. After filling up with LPG I found the car capable of barely 20mph having gone in to limp-home mode. This time switching to petrol made no difference and the engine revs did there own thing, regardless of throttle position!

The problem was diagnosed as being the notorious ETM which was replaced by Marshalls of Peterborough for a Volvo subsidized £250. (Interestingly, this subsidy applies to all years of manufacture for factory bi-fuel models.) I also had to pay to have the ECU reset since the car and the part ETM didn’t ‘recognise’ each other.

Since having this work done the car has run seamlessly, with no signs of the ugly LPG stuttering symptoms.

Big cheese. Will Volvo subsidies the replacement irrespective of owner/owners? Thanks again. With the help of the forum I have managed to get car running for £4.99 instead of the £900 quoted. A small investment by me will see the car do another 150k miles. Cheers all

This subsidized price was offered without me asking for it, even though I was not the original owner of the vehicle. The ETM problems are well recorded on this site and elsewhere on the web.

However be aware that when I phoned around for quotes, one Volvo dealer was most put out that I'd been offered this price saying he couldn't even get the part for that price. He stated that the subsidy only applied for cars manufactured upto 2002, so obviously he didn't know that all years of S60 and V70 bi-fuels are affected. With this in mind, you may have to either phone round for the subsidy or persuade a dealer you are entitled to it.

For more background info I suggest you have a quick look here.... http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/etm.shtml
