Default Fault In the Engine Electronic System S70 T5

Hi All,

Im only here when I want something, typical!

Can anyone advise what I sould be looking for if the "Fault In Engine Electronic System" light comes on, on the dashboard of a S70 T5. The car has suddent jolts while driving along(almost like it cuts out ans starts again while moving). Also while in traffic sometimes it cuts out and can take several attempts to start, after which the car stinks of petrol.

Does this need plugging in atr the dealer or are there things I can check out first.

Cheers all.

You can guess all day but the only way is to have the fault code read either at the dealer or as the car is OBDII compliant it can be read with a 'standard' code reader at most good garages.

DIY versions using a laptop are available:

http://www.obd-2.com/ (engine only but reads live data)

http://www.onboarddiagnostics.co.uk/volfcr/index.htm
(all systems and Volvo codes, but no live data)

Sounds like it may be ignition related, if fuel is pumping still and it is a clean cutout and restart. You may want to check the crank sensor and it's wiring and connectors, even inside the rubber boot. They can have intermittent faults when hot as they break up inside and make/break. Then go through the wiring and the rest of the ignition system, check earths, ECU connector on tight etc. Hopefully you will find something visually obvious.

If you can find somewhere to plug it in, the presence of the light and hence a fault code is likely to lead you straight there, but not always directly!

I'd get it sorted quickly though because if you've got unburnt fuel passing through your CAT then you're likely to cause irrepairable damage to it which will lead to a costly replacement bill.
