Default D5 stuttering and smoking at low revs

My 2002 V70 has started stuttering and smoking at low revs- 1500-2000 rpm. It's ok in other ranges and pulls fine otherwise.

Likely suspects are:

EGR valve, MAF or air entry via intercooler or hose.

I followed the advice in the cleaning plenum thread and while there was gunk in the EGR/ plenum hose it didn't look too bad- though I guess the valve itself could be the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be something else?

Is there any way to pinpoint the cause without replacing all of the above parts?

Many Thanks

hey mate,

I have recently had this problem with my S60 D5!

Turned out it is a split intercooler!

If you get somebody to rev the car, put your hand over the lower opening in the middle of the front bumper, I could feel air pushing out of mine, and if you check underneath there may be signs of oil leakage like I found.

Also I would check the intercooler hoses and the turbo boost solenoid on the front of the airbox!

Thanks- that's really helpful- I do have oil where you describe though I had thought it was from where the intercooler hose came off around a year ago. The hose looks ok now so it's looking like the intercooler is a likely culprit. I'll have a proper look when the weather's better.

Did you replace you intercooler- I hear they're quite pricey- any tips on sourcing one? I guess it may be repairable with that metal weld stuff in a tube.
