I still cant believe the turning circle on our 240 . Its just incredible the front wheels seem to almost come back on themselves on full lock . Ive seen some small cars give up on a parking parking space then when I have a go peoples faces just gasp in shock saying how on earth di u do that ! !
Think I would really miss the turning circle on ours if we went with modern front wheel drives with a rubbish lock on them now . |

It is an MOT failure. Some garages may not be as stringent over a little rubbing, but to to the letter of the MOT rules it's a failure. I'm ok if the vehicle isn't moving, but traveling with any amount of speed to induce a little body roll ends up with the wheel rubbing if close to full lock. If the MOT tester sees evidence that's it's rubbed but it doesn't touch when the vehicle isn't moving then it's a PASS Vipes

Yep, it's because it's a big five cylinder engine mounted across the car with the
gearbox on the end so there is no room for the wheels to go without making the car even wider, nothing to do with CV joint or anything else. BMs and old Volvos, that people are comparing with, have the engine along the axis of the car so there are no room issues. |

I was going to say, it was nothing to do with the CV joint, but didn't want to say anything in case I got it utterly wrong. Could turn the wheels through 90 degrees if there was room to do so.
Funny but if you search around, looking at sales literature on the S60 it says it's a breeze to park with the adaptive power steering and good visibility etc etc. yeah right!!!

Hi,
The reason most new Volvos (and, infact most new cars) have a lousy turning circle is becase of the FWD.. As mentioned the CV joints at the front on your drive shafts can only turn so much. Hence why a RWD 200, 700 or 900 can out turn a fiesta!! Des. . .

"Note: Some vehicles have lock stops comprising soft metal pads on the body for the front tyres to rub against. These are acceptable if they are properly maintained so that they do not damage the tyres." If there is a plate designed for the tyre to rub on than thats passable, same with the Morgan sportscar with an alloy block fitted to the chassis exactly for this reason , to pass the MOT ... so light rubbing on the plate on full lock will pass the MOT ... If it fails then appeal ! if you have this problem then swap over the steering stops on the suspension arms it will present an unworn part of the stop and reduce the lock enough to not touch .. |
