Default How to tell the difference between the 163 and the 185?

Hi Guys

What can I look at, in the engine bay, attached to the engine, that will tell me whether I have a 163 or a 185? I dont want to look at engine codes, VIN numbers etc.. I want to e.g. look at a big ass turbo or a dump valve or orange instead of blue dipstick tube; whatever can concretely confirm whether my D5 is a 163 or a 185

Thanks in advance!

Quick and simple - what colour is the Engine cover?

black - then 163 - silver then 185 BHP.

No big ass turbo I'm afraid!

I believe the 185 is a 6 speed & the 163 a 5 speed, But I don't suppose that will help with an auto.

But is there anything that is attached to the engine, that is non-removable, that can be used to tell the difference? I dont really want to go off the colour of a plastic removable lid!

No, not really if you don't want to look at the VIN.

Again.. the engine could have been replaced (though it isnt present int he history, the history has some puzzling entries, like Fog Light Unit Replacement - the vehicle isnt fitted with fogs) so I was really hoping for some indisputable mechanical thing like a model number of turbo, or writing on the injector pump or something..

So 163/185/more is purely a software issue? Anyone know/recommend anywhere doing software upgrades in the north west? Maybe it's been mapped already, and thats why it feels livelier than the other one we have.. Or maybe the S is lighter than the SE.. I dont know..
