You will have sucked air into the pump and will now need to bleed it out.

Connecting a suction pump to the fuel filter and pulling diesel worked when I changed the filter on my ford.

Not sure how you do it on an xc90, I would change fuel filter and follow the process specified .

There is no specified process. Just fill up and go, however...

There will be no fuel in the line so you need to switch on the ignition for about 20 sec then off. Repeat 6 times. That will run the low pressure fuel pump and prime the system. It should then start. If not you may have a blockage (rubbish from the bottom of the tank). Remove the fuel filter and have a look.

Many older diesel vehicles had no electric lift pump and relied purely on the mechanical pump to suck the fuel up, which they can't if the lines are full of air. My 2005 Honda had a hand pump for getting the fuel up in this scenario!

Surely the owners manual gives relevant advice?

With regard to the above - the XC90 does have a lift pump, so it doesn't need to be primed in the same way as some vehicles that don't (like the Volvo diesels with the 4-pot Ford/PSA engine). Volvo do not specify any specific or special procedures if the tank is run dry.

The XC90 has a complicated multi-chamber fuel tank, if it has been completely run dry you may need to add another few gallons. As has been said try turning the ignition on for 5-10 seconds and then off again about 10-20 times, no need to crank the engine. Then try to start it.... The lift pump runs for about 5 seconds every time the ignition is switched on. If still no luck then remove the fuel feed to the HP pump and check if any diesel is flowing when the ignition is turned on (i.e. place the end into a cup).
