Question Turning over indefinitely

Hello all!

I recently bought an 850r manual estate - my first foray into Volvo's!

Unfortunately it's decided not to start any more.

I've used it almost daily for four weeks and in that time it's failed to start a few times, turning over seemingly indefinitely but never actually firing. The first time, I returned a few hours later to try again and it started first time. The next two times I simply got out the car, locked and unlocked the doors a couple of times, and it fired.

This time however, no such luck.

The only other symptom I've noticed (when it's working!) is some throttle hesitation when cold, but unsure if this could be related. It feels as if there are some flat spots in the throttle at lower speeds, something I'd probably attribute to a sensor issue on my BMW E30 but I'm not sure how much BMW knowledge I can transfer over to the wagon. Were it my BMW, I'd probably be looking at cam/crank sensor issues.

Relevant info: The car was with its previous owner for five years and never failed to start, which I trust. It was also recently serviced including spark plugs and PCV.

Any ideas would be appreciated

That's one of my first thoughts. I can test that with a code reader and multimeter so that seems a quick and easy place to start. Assuming I can get VOL-FCR working on the laptop. Code reading software/hardware is never as straightforward as it seems!

CPS is definitely a possible, but it's not a common fault on these. Much more common is the contacts to the antenna ring around the ignition switch, which picks up the signal to disable the immobiliser.

I know I'd be looking at this first, as if this is the fault you won't see a signal on the CPS and will be led to believe that's the problem when it isn't - if that makes sense?

Cheers!

Thanks. How would I check the contacts?

Would you immobiliser allow the engine to turn over or would it do nothing at all?

When I had a problem with the immobilier antenna ring the car would turn over and fire but die immediately, not keep turning over without firing. The common fault with the immobiliser ring is the contact of the plug to the ring, often improved just by unplugging and plugging back in a few times to clean the contacts.

Not sure how old your car is but just for information - not all 850s have the ignition immobiliser. Mine, a 1994 850, does not have this.

Thanks for the replies all.

Mine is a 97.

EDIT: Weird. Just tried it again and it started first time. I think I'll leave it on the drive until I've diagnosed something!
