Default Manual Turbo Intercooler estate MPG...what to realistically

Hi all,
I'm very tempted to add a late Turbo Intercooler Estate to my fleet, I have a line on one and I can insure it for beans thanks to a special offer from my insurer, but the one thing that is holding me back a little is not knowing what to expect from it in terms of MPG.

I've mainly owned NA cars, but have had a 940 2.3LPT estate with an M90 which was surprisingly decent on fuel, but I appreciate that these are a different beast.

I've got the option of buying another one of those instead, but the cache of the TI is making it very tempting.

Would love to know your thoughts.

Mine isn't a manual m90... yet, it is an aw71 auto with overdrive.

My daily commute is motorway and b roads and it averages 26-30mpg on that. On a long run on the motorway 70-85mph cruising without using cruise control I get about 35-37mpg. If I stuck to bang on 70mph I imagine it would be over 40mpg.

I would expect a manual car to get a bit better, also mine has electric and leather everything so it is nearly 1.5 ton where as a lower specced car would be around 1.35 ton again improving economy.

By definition if it was an LPT it was fairly late and if it had an M90 it was a fairly late manual as well. And if it was an LPT it was also already intercooled. But I guess what you actually mean here is a HPT...??

We've recently established on here once again that the 2.3 LPT and 2.3 HPT are as good as the same thing. Have a look at this thread.....

It seems to me you are already in a good position to predict what you are going to get. Fuel economy is as much about how you maintain a car, how you drive it and what type of journeys you do as what the car is itself....

What model is it? The early 740 and 760 were badged "turbo intercooler" 4 cylinder turbo with nearly 200BHP I believe. Is it one of these or the 940 HPT Turbo?

My 1996 940 LPT Auto isn't fantastic, but not dreadful. Not worked it out! Just add fuel as needed.
My lexus IS 220D averages around 38mpg summer 34mpg winter.

Thanks all!

This is a 1990 740 Turbo Intercooler estate. I missed out on the 940 LPT I was considering as another buyer got in there first, so I decided to bowl in and put a deposit down.

It's in for a new MOT and having the driveshaft centre support bearing done (it was the only advisory on the last MOT) and I collect on Saturday.

I'm VERY excited to own this car...I've always wanted one. Only 31 of the 740TI cars (estate and saloon combined) are left on the road in the UK so quite a rare bird. It's minty clean too...can't wait to get my hands on it!

I should add that it's a manual with the M46 box...I have an M47 in my 2.0 NA 744 which is a lovely box but I gather the M46 is tougher to withstand the extra torque of the turbo lump.

unless its your daily and you are doing lots of miles, the DIFFERENCE in fuel use is pretty much the least of your costs.

Look at it this way, if your current ride does 30 mpg and your proposed car does 25 mpg, the difference is 5/30 x 100 = 17%. Assuming around 6 quid a gallon, and 12,000 miles a year, the difference is 400 quid a year.

If you can't afford 8 quid a week, you should perhaps consider a different hobby or transport option.

I totally agree, it isn't a massive issue. I was just curious more than anything. The 740TI was the car I really wanted, but if it was going to have disastrous economy figures against the 940 LPT it would been an extra consideration.

I can't wait to collect the car on Sat! Should be a fun trek back from Coventry to Dorset in it.

Oh is this the one that was up in Coventry? I was tempted myself but its really an early saloon I want. Glad to hear its as good as the guy claimed.

Blimey! I've heard of being sent to Coventry Phil but......................

Enjoy the drive home and make sure you upload some pics! If memory serves, the 740 Turbo is quite a raw performer, the 940 was tamed somewhat to "hide" the turbo boost whereas the 740 i think revelled in it - 183bhp if memory serves as well.

If you're lucky, it will have the original twin-tailpipe back box as well - officially only fitted to the 740 Turbo and i believe, only the earlier ones although can be retro-fitted to later models i think, if you can find one!
