The T-5/T5 is simply an engine type rather than the R which is a marque. Cars were available with a range of engine types and specifications. The very first high pressure turbos did not have a T-5 badge, they just had a Turbo badge on the back. When people refer to a T5 they are talking about the engine in the car - not a marque. The five pot Rs (Which stands for "Refined" have a high pressure turbo as well). The current C30 T5s have a T5 engine, however it is a different five pot engine to the old 70 series.

In the EU area(only in the USA),I have never saw the 850s with the tag Turbo in the back. So I cannot agree with you on that. Only the old bricks (200,400,700 and 900s series) got that stick on the back on the high pressure turbo versions.

For me T5 is a marque, and if you look at the new S60 it is obvious that Volvo uses the badge as it,it will now be a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine, evolved from the 2.0 GTTDI version.

The early 850 T5's were definitely badged as "Turbo" not "T5", in the UK at least.

For me T5 was certainly not a marque - it was very clearly linked to the iconic T5 engine developed throughout the life of the 850, P1 S/V70 and P2 S60 and V70. They were all 2.3l high pressure turbo engines based on that same original design, yes there were revisions to increase power, reduce emissions and improve drivability (at the expense of fun, if you ask me ) but you can trace the roots of the engine right back across the range.

It's a bit like saying the Rover V8 was a marque, there were SO many revisions of that engine but I don't think you could ever call it a marque. A Rover V8 is still a Rover V8 - the question is which revision of that engine do you have.

Recently however Volvo started using the T5 badge to denote the high performance varients - e.g. the S40 T5 runs a derivation of the 2.5T LPT engine. For me that's the point where "T5" stopped denoting an engine and became marketing speak.

Cheers,
John

Hi, I used to own one of the first 850 T-5 turbos. If you do a search there is plenty written about the early 850 "Turbo". There was only a "Turbo" badge on the back of the early UK T-5 Turbos.

This thread seems to be a little confused, if a T5 register exists surely we need to be able to confirm specifically what a T5 is.

As far as I have ever known T5 was used only for the 2.3 HPT 240 bhp engine.

Could somebody in the know end the speculation

The T5/T5-R has probably just been the 'Range topper' (engine department). Rather like the Focus ST. You'll find near enough the same engine in a '98 V70R and my own '04 S60 T5. Slight upgrades, modifications and increases in power output over the years. 240 - 250 - 260 and 265bhp engines over the years.
